WELCOME TO THE HOME OF WAYLAND YOUTH LACROSSE!

Wayland Youth Lacrosse offers lacrosse programs for the young people of Wayland, Massachusetts and promotes the participation, appreciation, and excitement for the sport of lacrosse in our town.  We provide parallel programs for boys and girls from kindergarten to eighth grade of all experience levels and abilities.

Our primary programs run throughout the spring months of March through June, and include team practices and league games against teams from other nearby towns.  All players are welcome and there are no tryouts for our Classic town teams.  We offer Select teams in the spring for players seeking additional lacrosse opportunities as well other skills clinics and activities at other points in the year.

We are an all-volunteer 503(c) organization that is affiliated with US Lacrosse, Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL) for our girls’ teams, and Massachusetts Youth Lax (MYL) for our boys’ teams.

Program Overview

The Wayland Youth Lacrosse Boys and Girls programs are part of two separate lacrosse leagues.  The Boys program is part of Massachusetts Youth Lacrosse (MYL) and the Girls program is part of Founders Girls Lacrosse League (FGLL).  These leagues are separate entities, function independently, and as a result, have different fees, dates, and insurance coverage.  These differences are reflected in the WYL price difference in the registration process.

Girls FGLL Registration

Similar to last year, our girls lacrosse league, Founders Girls Lacrosse League, no longer uses US Lacrosse for its player insurance coverage and instead has contracted with a different insurance provider.  There are two consequences of this change: (1) our girls no longer need a US Lacrosse membership to participate in WYL programs, and (2) we have needed to add an additional $35 to the registration fee to cover this insurance.  The girls’ insurance coverage will come out of the WYL registration fee.

Boys MYL Registration

Players who are registering for Boys’ Lacrosse will continue to need to also have an active membership with Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse League to register and participate in WYL programs.

Learn to Love Lacrosse Development Program

“Learn to Love Lacrosse” is a sticks-only, low-cost, development lacrosse program offered to all Kindergarten boys and girls and interested 1s graders who may not be ready for the full town program of practices and games.  It will be coached by WYL coaches and Wayland High School lacrosse players.

Weekly practices will be held for one hour on Saturday afternoons during the spring season from May through June.  Sessions will be held on small fields, there will be no contact, and we will be using softer lacrosse balls and tennis balls for instructional purposes.

Classic Program Teams (Grades 1-8)

Wayland Youth Lacrosse players in grades 1-8 participate in the Classic Program in which they practice twice a week and play games on Sundays.  Sunday games vary by time and location.  Lacrosse teams are composed  of players that are balance both grades and ability levels.  Teams are composed of 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, and 7th/8th grade players.

The lower youth division (grades first through fourth) introduces players to fundamental lacrosse skills, drills, and game situations.  Lower youth games are smaller sided games and include goalies.

The upper youth division (grades fifth through eighth) introduces players to more complex offensive and defensive lacrosse concepts and game-like situations, and reviews fundamental lacrosse skills and drills.  Upper youth games are full field games that include goalies.

Select Program Teams (Grades 5-8)

We will again be offering boys and girls Select Team Programs for Grades 5/6 and 7/8 to provide an additional opportunity for players to participate in a high-level developmental program against very competitive teams.   In order to participate on Select Teams, players must also be participating in the WYL Classic Program.  Select team participation requires an additional registration and fee.

Safety

Finally, last spring, we successfully provided lacrosse players in Wayland with both indoor and outdoor practices, games and jamborees that followed safety protocols, engaged our athletes in lacrosse and kept our players safe on the fields.  It is more than understandable that families may still be concerned for their children’s health by participating in youth sports due to COVID-19.  There is an inherent risk in playing youth sports that cannot be completely eliminated.  Nevertheless, we will continue to follow guidelines for youth sports and employ the best practices for athletes.

We are very excited to be able to offer another full program of practices, games, and events this spring.   If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us.
